Benefits of Family Exercise Programs
One of the best ways to get fit is to enlist the support and help of family members, which can easily be accomplished by adopting family exercise programs into your daily routine. What is good for one family member after all is likely good for another.

More and more studies suggest that Americans are getting fatter. Part of the reason is a lack of adequate physical activity. Most people have become so used to modern conveniences like the remote control, cars, microwaves and technology that rarely does one have to lift a finger anymore to get anything accomplished. The result? We are increasing our girth and increasing our chances for long-term health problems.

The solution? They solution may lie in family exercise programs. One of the biggest complaints people have is it is difficult to stick to an exercise program. It is hard to stay motivated, to stay interested and even to find the time to stick to an exercise program. Fortunately a family exercise program can change that. One of the biggest benefits of working out together is family members tend to stay more motivated, tend to encourage one another and tend to have more fun.

Family Exercise Programs Defined
Fortunately, much of that can change if you opt for a family exercise program. What is a family exercise program? Any activity that involves the whole family. This may be raking leaves in the backyard, going for family bike rides, participating in family sports events, walking with your kids to school… you get the idea.

Do you belong to a gym? Most gyms are now incorporating 'family planning.' What that means is they are creating programs that are geared for the whole family. Not sure if your gym has any activities that your family might be interested in? Check out your local recreation program. You'll find parent-child swim classes, tournaments, games, sporting events and more. You can even purchase a punch pass to visit the recreation center and usually get a discount if more than one family members signs up.

Factors That Can Defeat A Family Exercise Program
The one thing sure to kill a well-intentioned program is too much television. We all fall into the trap of watching far too much television. Television isn't good for you and is definitely isn't good for your television. The more television you or your children watch, the less likely you are to exercise and the more likely you are to eat. Studies actually show people eat more while watching television than when not. Even worse? You may lose your motivation entirely and lose track of time. Children who watch too much television are not only more likely to be overweight or obese, but may also be more likely to suffer from attention deficit and related disorders.

What can you do to help? Limit the amount of television time you allow every day. Plan family exercise sessions before television viewing is allowed. You may find that each member is so involved in their fitness fun that they forget about the television entirely. Even if this is not the case you can at least feel better knowing you got some exercise for the day before plopping in front of the television.

Remember, a little exercise goes a long way. Even if you simply pack the kids up in the stroller and go for a walk, you can consider your efforts family exercise worthy. Everyone will benefit from the fresh air and improved perspective a little sunshine offers.
