There are hundreds of different scents or fragrances on the market today. How do you know which will best match your personality, style or even mood? One trick to finding a fragrance that matches your personality is first deciding what types of fragrances appeal to you. Some fragrances for example are flowery, while others are musky. Still others provide a 'clean' scent much like soap or shampoo. Some perfumes make us feel sexy, others romantic and still others giddy with glee. Many women decide on a couple of perfumes they can wear depending on their mood, while still others decide to stick with one they know has staying power.

Here are some fragrances you can select to match your personality and moods.

Oriental Fragrances
Oriental scents tend to fall into the heavy seduction or sensual category. These perfumes tend to very thick and heavy. Many contain a mix of flowery and musky scents. Common combinations include rose, woody musk's, vanilla and jasmine. Still others contain sandalwood or patchouli. If you are a bold and sensual personality, or want to show off your seductive side, an oriental fragrance may be just what you are looking for. Sample fragrances include:

  • Dior Addict Eau de Parfum
  • Lancome Attraction Eau de Parfum Spray
  • True Star by Hilfiger
  • Yves Saint Laurent's Opium
  • Samsara by Guerlain

Classic
Are you a classic personality? You probably have an upbeat personality. If mild florals appeal to you perhaps you'd like to try some classic scents. These scents are generally defined by their elegance and upbeat nature. Some classic examples include:

  • Ralph Lauren Style Eau de Parfum Spray
  • Calvin Klein One
  • Elizabeth Arden Red Door
  • Le Feu D'Issey

Clean and Sporty
Many women prefer to feel clean than perfumed. Fortunately there are a number of perfumes that do just this. These are sometimes also referred to as sporty perfumes as they are popular among active personalities that like to smell good but not overdone. If you like the outdoors and plenty of sunshine, these scents will sit well with you. Examples include:

  • Chanel Cristalle Eau de Parfum
  • Bond No. 9 Little Italy
  • DKNY Be Delicious

Romantic
Romantic scents are not quite as heady as Orientals. They are usually milder flowery scents complemented by warmer base tones including amber. These perfume fragrances tend to suggest innocence and a carefree personality. Some have a slightly spicy flavor to them. Some examples include:

  • Realities Eau de Parfum
  • Healing Garden
  • Amarige de Givenchy
  • Eternity by Calvin Cline

Testing Out Fragrances
Testing various perfumes to see what fits you best can be a challenge. You should always test your fragrances however to make sure you buy one that you like and one that smells good on you. Not all perfumes smell as good on as they do in the bottle. After sniffing one or two fragrances in a room full of perfume, you may find you can't tell the difference between one scent and another. Fortunately there are some tips you can follow to make sure you get the most of your perfume smelling experience.

  1. Test only a small amount of fragrance at a time.
  2. Never test more than four fragrances in one day.
  3. Sniff a coffee bean in between fragrances. This will help clear your nose so you can smell the fragrance correctly.
  4. If you find one you like, spray a little bit on your wrist and then walk around for about an hour. Sometimes perfumes react to our body's alkalinity or acidity and can smell funny after some time. Others can give you a raging headache. It's better to test the perfume thoroughly before you make a purchase you are likely to regret.
If you find a perfume you like but don't want to invest a lot of money, consider going with the Eau de parfum spray. It is a bit less expensive than pure perfume and smells just as good. While it may not last as long, you can always refresh your scent later in the day. One last thing. Remember when using perfume a little goes a long way. You may love your new scent, but chances are your coworkers and friends won't appreciate your presence if you come drenched from head to toe in it. Consider the fellow that approaches you with too much cologne on. You wouldn't want to hang out with him all night now would you? Same goes with perfume. Just a little bit is all that is usually needed to make a big impact.
