Finding the Nutritional Value of Foods
Discovering the nutritional value of the foods you eat is just as important as eating the right foods. In fact, the more you know about a foods nutritional value the more likely you are to select healthy, good for you foods in your diet. What exactly is the nutritional value of the foods you eat? That depends on who you talk to. Nutritional value consists of many key elements, including:
  • The total calories in a food product
  • The amount of fat and cholesterol in food
  • The amount of carbohydrates and fiber in the food you eat
  • The amount of protein a food contains
  • The amount of sodium food has
  • The amount of vitamins and minerals a food provides
Fortunately if you buy packaged or processed foods most have a notional label on the packaging that describes the nutritional value of these foods. Unfortunately most packaged and processed foods are not the best for you, so rest assured their nutritional value isn't all its cracked up to be.

What can you do? There are certain foods that are simply good for you. Their nutritional value is known hence rest assured if you eat plenty of them in your diet you are bound to look and feel your best. What are these foods? Why, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and whole grains of course! You've probably heard this once or twice before but its worth repeating again. A diet chock full of each of these foods is much more likely to benefit you from a health and wellness perspective than one loaded with fatty and greasy foods.

To the best of your ability, you should always attempt to eat whole foods. Whole foods are foods in their natural state, and thus are likely to contain the highest levels of nutrients per serving. Any time a food is processed, packed or canned it looses some of its nutritional value. That said, we are all in a hurry. If that is the case it is alright to supplement your diet with frozen or canned fruits and vegetables. Just be sure you occasionally make an effort to eat some whole foods. Remember, the nutritional value of foods will help contribute to your health and well being.

Does Anything Decrease The Nutritional Value of Foods?
Yes! Certain cooking and processing techniques may decrease the nutritional value of the foods you eat. Cooking foods too thoroughly, especially vitamins may result in some loss of nutritional value. Like we mentioned earlier, processing such as canning may reduce some of foods nutritional value. This does not mean you have to eat all raw fruits and vegetables however. Simply consider gentler cooking techniques. You can for example steam vegetables to preserve much of their nutritional content. You may also stir fry, just be sure to leave a little crunch and therefore a little nutritional zip in the food you eat.

Lastly but most importantly just remember its important to incorporate a wide selection of foods in your diet. The wider the variety of foods the more likely you are to get the nutrition you need from the foods you eat!
